Convenient reagent for preparing N-succinimidyl esters of N-protected amino acids and other acids;1 activated carbonate, e.g. synthesis of ureas and carbamates;2,3 and coupling of ligands to proteins (via lysines).4  A coupling reagent to prepare a heterobifunctional, cleavable linker-SVEC-(succinimide vinaylsufonylethyl carbonate)- for thiol modified DNA.Also applied as a coupling reagent in the synthesis of thiophospholipids for anchoring biomembranes to gold surfaces6 and as an activating reagent  for synthesis of self-assembling block copolymers containing adhensive moieties7 and for post-functionalization of polymer brushes8.
